- Reta lived in various places in Minidoka county including Acequia, Heyburn and Rupert. Her family sometimes lived with her paternal grandparents and one year a school bus.
She enjoyed the company of her cousins. They could spend nights with their aunts and uncles and grandparents as they all went to the same schools and the family all lived close, finding beds in drawers, beds and the floor.
She loved to tell her grandchildren tales of snow on the blankets in the morning, getting a bottle of milk for her mom once a day from the barn, swimming in the canal, an orange once a year at Christmas (or when you where sick) and helping to tend her younger brothers and sisters. They, of course, tell the stories differently. She tells about riding an old horse a mile to catch the school bus. When she was older her family moved in town and she could walk to church until she was old enough to drive. Then her father allowed her to drive to Mutual (Young Women), even when her brothers wanted the car for something else.
Reta married Dwaine Richard Anderson on Sep 11, 1955 in Rupert, Idaho. They lived in Kentucky, Tennessee, Germany, Idaho, Georgia, Utah, Turkey, Maryland and Idaho. After her husband's death she lived alternately in Idaho, Utah, and Missouri.
Music was something that she appreciated and she played the piano a little, sang and loved to dance. She was the 1951 queen of the Gold and Green Ball (princess from the Heyburn Ward). She passed that love to her children and grandchildren, taking every opportunity to hear them sing and play their instruments. She requested that her grandchildren sing at her mission farewell in 1995 and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to sing at her funeral, which they did.
She spent many hours doing genealogy. When living in Maryland, she was able to do research in Pennsylvania and extended many family lines there. Her daughter, Linda continues that work.
She was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-saints her entire life. She was a Primary president, Relief Society President, Choir director, Primary music leader and teacher, and Relief Society teacher. After the death of her husband in 1994 she went on a Family History mission in Salt Lake City.
She was active in politics, and had a very passionate opinion on what she thought best for our country. While active in the Republican party, she held the offices of Vice-Chair of District 23, President and Vice President of the Magic Valley Republican Women, ran for Idaho state legislature in District 15, supported Right-to-life, Right-to-Work, and fought against pornography and the lottery.
She was a military wife for 18 years, living and traveling in different parts of the world. She organized the first Relief Society in Augsburg, Germany in 1956 and was active in the Officers Wife's Club in Turkey and Maryland before her husband retired in 1973.
She enjoyed life and was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She had 4 children, who provided her with 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, who were her pride and joy.
She is survived by Her daughter Linda (Stephen) Smith of Hagerman, Idaho; her sons, Larry (Tammy) Anderson, St George, Utah; Gary (Jacqueline) Anderson, South Salt Lake, Utah; and James (Margaret) Anderson, Oregon. She is very loved and will be greatly missed.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Dwaine Richard Anderson; her parents, Edward and Reta; her brothers, Junior, Larry, Donald, Darold, and Blaine; and her sisters, Dorothy Hansen and Betty Johansen.
Her memorial was held at the Hagerman LDS church at 10 am followed by a lunch provided by the Relief Society and a graveside service at the Rupert Cemetery at 1 pm on Friday, May 23, 2014.
