DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER
Mrs. Sarah Kerr died at her home near Warsaw on Wednesday, January 21, after a lingering illness from cancer of the stomach, aged 64 years, 10 months and 27 days.
Sarah Armstrong was born in County Mahanna, Ireland but emigrated to Canada at an early age. Christopher Kerr in 1858 at his home in Huron County, Ontario. They came to Nebraska in 1873 taking a homestead and pre-emption in this county, where both lived until overtaken by death. Mr. Kerr having died in 1875. They were the parents of twelve children, eight daughters and four sons, of whom nine are living namely: Mrs. Thomas Wall, Mrs. Theodore Hohman, Mrs. George Irvine, Mrs Charles Buneman, Mrs. Lloyd Penneston, Mrs. John Johansen, Mrs. Mary Harvey and James and John Kerr.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ilinger at the Warsaw Church and the remains interred in the Warsaw Cem by the side of her husband. A large number of friends including nearly all of the early settlers on Canada Hill were present to witness the last sad rites. Mrs. Kerr was a rugged, wholesouled woman, whose character contained many of the excellent qualities from which success was achieved by the sturdy pioneers. Her indomitable spirit is best illustrated by the fact that, although left a widow on a new and undeveloped farm with a large family dependent on her, she faced the situation courageously and the time of her death possessed of property worth many thousands of dollars.
Mrs. Kerr was always a warm friend of the REPUBLICAN and her cheerful visits to this office will be sadly missed. We join with a host of friends in mourning her loss and extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
