- Martin H. Ellingson was born 7 Mar 1890 on a farm 6 miles northeast of Perley, MN in Lee Township. He was the son of Hans Ellingson (15 Sep 1853-6 Dec 1919) and his wife, Inger Evenson Ellingson (12 Nov 1864-29 Dec 1939). Hans was born at Kyrksæterpg. Sør Trøndelag, Norway and Inger was born at Ulnes, Øppland, Norway.
Martin had the following known siblings: Elias O. 29 Mar 1887-11 Jun 1913, (Minnie _______), Ida 23 Apr 1894-22 Apr 1910, John H. 11 Apr 1896-8 Mar 1957 (Olga Hansine Kirksether 12 Dec 1904-23 Aug 1989), Helmar 22 Nov 1898-22 Dec 1935, Kalmer 20 Aug 1900-29 Dec 1901), a second Kalmer H. 1901/02-19 Mar 1925, and Helga C. ca 1904-unknown (Oliver J. Hagen 23 Jul 1899-16 Oct 1969).
At the age of 20 years Martin went to work for Halvor and Kjerstie Kroshus. After a couple of years, he rented a farm 1 mile south of the Kroshus farm. While there he most likely met Tilda "Tillie" Kroshus, daughter of Halvor and Kjerstie Kroshus. They were married 14 Mar 1914. Sadly their marriage was short lived as Tillie passed away 1 Sep 1915 at Fargo, ND.
Martin married a second time 23 Nov 1918, when he married Minnie Josephine Jermstad at Horace, Cass Co., ND. Minnie was born 4 Oct 1893, the daughter of Olaf and Hannah (Ottermoe) Jermstad who lived in rural Horace. Martin met Minnie when she worked at the Halvor and Kjerstie Kroshus farm.
In 1939 Martin purchased the farm he had been renting. He and Minnie remained on that farm the rest of their farming lives.
Martin and Minnie adopted two children. They are: Lillian Nina Olson Ellingson 27 Jul 1922-16 Aug 2012 (Elmer W. Hiller 31 Dec 1919-1 Feb 1995, divorced and Merrill "Merle" Anderson 17 Apr 1912-8 May 1979) and Howard Marvel Clemenson 22 Aug 1928-Living (Bonnie Lucille Qualley 10 May 1930-7 Jan 2013). Howard was the biological nephew of Minnie as her sister Lydia Clemenson was Howard's biological mother.
The Martin Ellingsons were members of the Bethania Lutheran Church rural Perley. Martin served as a trustee and Minnie was active in and an officer of the Ladies Aid.
Martin passed away 16 Aug 1962 at St. Ansgar's Hospital, Moorhead, MN. He was 72 years old at the time of his death. Funeral services for him were held at the Bethania Lutheran Church 18 Aug 1962. Pastor Raymond L. Larson officiated at the service. Pall bearers were: Robert Kroshus, Lars Stennes, Victor Qualley, Leland Thoen, Alvin Qualley, and Chester Dosland. Honorary pall bearers were: Martin Kroshus, Lauritz Olson, Chester Mathiason, F. F. Frater, Joe Kroshus and Andrew Mathiason.
