TWO MEN MISSING AFTER TUNA BOAT BURNS - Presumed drowned
Two men, one of them from Astoria, are missing and presumed dead after their 40-foot tuna fishing boat from Astoria burned and sank about 50 miles off Newport Sunday morning.
Missing are John Grotting, 62, Coos Bay, and his grandnephew, Randy Lizon, of Astoria. They were aboard the Signe S, anchored with a fleet of other tuna boats.
The U.S. Coast Guard presumes the two men abandoned the burning boat and subsequently drowned, a Coast Guard spokesman at Air Station Astoria said today.
A four-engine search plane from San Francisco, a helicopter from Astoria and a 62-foot boat from Newport went to the scene and searched without success for the missing men.
The Coast Guards first report from the tug "Seaspan" of Vancouver, B.C., who reported seeing flames at about 4:45 a.m. The Seaspan said it couldnt see any sign of life on the boat. The helicopter reached the scene at about 5:45 a.m. Rescuers were unable to board the boat because of the burning flames.
Three 55-gallon fuel drums at the stern eventually exploded, sinking the boat about three hours after the fire was reported.
The Coast Guard suspended the search for the missing men pending further developments.
