- Jorund E. Sandness
A 46-year resident of San Pedro, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, January 7, 2007 in San Pedro. Jorund was born in Two Harbors, Minn., and was 93 when he died. He served in the 151st Field Artillery Battalion during World War II, participating in the North African and Italian campaigns. He was a lifelong Lutheran. Jorund spent his career with the Veterans Administration, retiring as a computer supervisor after 36 years. He was an accomplished woodworker, as a youth he built by hand a rowboat that withstood many years' use on Lake Superior. Jorund loved his home and was devoted to his family. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage. Jorund enjoyed traveling with his wife to her birthplace in England; he met his wife in England during World War II while she served in the British army.
Jorund is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma Sandness; daughter, Peggy (David) Cobb of Lynwood, Washington; sons, John (Judy) Sandness of Loveland, Colorado, and Paul (Ruth) Sandness of Huntington Beach; grandchildren, Amber, Jeanette, Kevin and April; great-grandchildren, Leah and Casey; and sister, Dorothy (Emmert) Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Astrid Sandness; father, Nels Sandness; sister, Esther Hedin; and brothers, Alan and Norman Sandness. The memorial service will be at Rice Mortuary Chapel, Torrance, on Thursday, January 18, 2007. Inurnment will be private.
